Welcome to my tutorial/review for the Garage Kit from Tohsaka Rin as Kaleido Ruby! I will show you step by step how I made this GK.
! Warning ! This review contains some panty-shots, so it's not completely Safe For Work!
I also made my own combination of colors, so please, do not judge by thinking "OMG YOU DID THE WRONG COLORS !!ONE!!1!
Pay note that in the beginning, every first few layers of colors look very rough, but no worries, they look better soon after!
Day 1: Preparation
I used to complete first day to prepare my GK. Starting with finding the right places for all the pieces.
Followed by starting to cut away the leftover material.
I decided to glue all the big parts together, so I only had a few parts to paint. Unfortunately, quite some green stuff was needed to fill in the gap on her coat.
Yes, a lot of resin leftovers...
And these are the parts all together! As you can see she now consists of 6 big parts. Did I also mention she is VERY big, scale 1/6. All my earlier GK's were 1/8 so this was something completely new for me!
I undercoated the parts that were going to have light colors white...
...and I undercoated the parts that would have darker colors black. It looks so shiny, because the paint is still wet. I let the undercoat dry for the night.
Day 2: Started painting the big parts
Here you can see the color of the undercoat that has dried up.
I started with her arm and gave her different shades of red on top of each other to experiment which color red was the right one. Note that I use about the same amount of layers on each piece, but I will not show that, because I would spam a lot of photos that way. ;)
Another shade of red for her glove.
Inside of her coat.
Started with making her socks and shoes red.
First layer of red on the coat and gloves.
Some more shades of red on her legs.
And some more red on her coat and gloves.
Trying to find the right shades of red on her gloves...
...and used the same shades on her legs...
...and on her coat.
Her legs are looking pretty good right now!
Time to start with the skin tone, it makes a GK look a lot more alive!
After mixing for a while, I found the right color of skin tone.
Let her skin be painted!
Her face freaks me pretty much out right now, but it looks better...right? Aw man, who am I kidding? It looks like some sort of floating ghost head! D:
I started with her underwear. I wasn't planning to make Tohsaka a cast-off figure, so I just painted it, because I wanted her to be fully painted.
Because no-one would ever see her underwear, I could paint it every color I wanted. My favorite color is purple, so the choice was made quickly.
The right color of skin tone on the bottom of her body.
I find it very nice that her underwear has a "hole" at the backside. This because, if you want to make her a cast-off, you can glue her tail on there.
Skin color is going smoothly...
And the right skin color on her face! ... I'm still scared.
And here it is! My perfect combination of shades of red! I tried to mimic to colors of this arm on the rest of her outfit!
I started to paint her ears and tail white. This is where I make the first step off the original coloring. Tohsaka is supposed to have black cat-ears and tail, but I really don't like that. Why? Well, you almost can't see she's a cat girl, because she has such a dark color hair!
Painted the first layer for her hair color.
It's the end of day 2 and this is the result!
Day 3: Completing the big parts and started with painting the details
Another layer on her hair and her ears are whiter now.
I started with painting her cape white...
...and her skirt white with some darker colored frills.
After another layer of white, I found out I wasn't really happy with this color, but I let it dry so I could think about what to do with it.
Another layer of flesh tone and I painted her earrings red. I couldn't find a good reference for the exact color of her earrings, so I decided to use my brightest red so that they would stand out.
After doubting for a while, I decided to try to make her cape pink. I tried to mix the lightest pink as possible, just to see how it turned out.
I wasn't completely happy about it, but I thought it was more interesting than having it all white.
I also colored the skirt in the same matching pink.
After the pink dried, I started to paint the details red.
I painted her eyes white...it doesn't make her less creepy... :I
First layer of red inside her mouth.
Beginning of her eyebrows.
And it's time to start the detailing! I really liked all the gold on the original coloring, so I decided to keep that.
Almost every part of her has gold details and I started to paint them very roughly (another layer was made shortly after these).
Then it was time for the second layer of gold. (Most of the pictures ended up blurry, so I this is the only one usable.)
I painted the underskirt white. I initially intended to paint it purple or black, but it stands out to much in comparison to the coat, white was a lot safer.
While the pink, white and gold were still drying, I decided to start painting her eyes. I first made a black "line" around her eyes and then added the first layer of blue.
I put the second layer of blue on her eyes and painted her tongue.
Third layer of blue...
Fourth layer of blue...
And let's not forget the twinkle in her eye!
After thinking for a while, I thought that the light color pink was to boring...so I decided to add another layer of brighter pink on top of the earlier pink. It seemed like a good combination.
Day 4: The last details, fixing some older paint and the making of her base
I started with painting some highlights. Here you can see some shading I did between her fingers, to let them stand out more. (Ignore the crappy paint around her fingers and the details, they still need to be fixed.)
I also thought, because Tohsaka was a pretty big GK (scale 1/6) that it would be nice to have some more details on her fingers. So I added a bright color of red (the same red as her earrings) as nail polish! I thought it looked quite cute!
I painted another layer of white on her tail.
And...this are all the parts at the moment. Everything is painted and now it was time to fix some details and spots that weren't covered enough. I don't have many pictures from this progress, because it are minimal details and it is not very interesting to show all of these! ;)
After I was happy with the paint, I started working on the base.
Because she was very heavy, it was really necessary to make a sturdy base for her. The first thing we thought about is putting a screw up her foot and the other half in a piece of plastic or wood so that she would stand. Eventually, we found a nice piece of wood which I painted black and put her on.
Final
And here she is! All pieces together!
Although it looks like she leans a lot, she is very sturdy. I am the most proud of her eyes, I think I really improved on the making of eyes since my last GK's.

I always paint together with a friend of mine at her working table.
The models my friend was working on.
About the half of the working table.
The next GK I'm going to paint in about half a year is: ITEM #74343

As mentioned below, really thin paint also made "streaks" on my model. So...eh...have any tips for that? ^-^
And the eyes were pretty big, so I had a great chance to practice painting eyes! :D
Yes, I have considered an airbrush mutliple times. I wanted to buy one together with the friend I paint with, but we still haven't found the right one (we don't mind paying a lot of money if the airbursh is really good). Do you have any recommendations?
EllisNice job! She looks great~!
Thank you!
eefiThe paint still looks rough at the end. But I can understand why. Never prime skin color parts black. You'll need thick paint to overpaint black and even then her skin color is slightly too dark. I know handbrushing is a lot harder (at least getting everything smooth) than painting with an airbrush but I know people who do it exceptionally well, so yeah it is possible. The key is patience and very very thinned paint.
The problem I had with thinned paint was because of the black undercoat. For my earlier GK's I thinned the paint a lot (those were completely white undercoated), but that was only possible here at the white parts. I DO think that the black undercoadt made the red and gold stand out more. Anyways, for my next GK, I'm thinking to make everything white again (maybe except Marisa's skirt).
Hatsuma24It is exceptionally hard when brushing by hand and you're right, it takes alot of patience. >_<;
I also realized that neither sanding or putty was used in the process.
Well, I used both of them (notice the green parts put in the holes?) and I have used special resin files, but she was VERY hard. Her cast had a lot of holes, mainly in the coat/dress, but I tried to make the best of it. :/
SazakoNice Job, Great to see your step by step process for painting her.
Did you just glue the pieces together?
Thank you! And yes, I simple glued the pieces together with some glue. I forgot the name of it...but it is that special glue you have to keep in your refrigerator from the brand Pritt.
FauxtoolVery nice step by step. I have painted 40k but now I want to try a GK. I would definitely thin those paints to at least a milk consistency, I can see a lot of brush marks. I like the colors you picked and the skin tone looks great.
As long as you are happy its fine.
Where do you guys like to buy your GKs from? Im in the US if that matters.
Im also curious as to what kind of glue you use for resin and if you pinned the models
Yes, I also thinned the paint a lot, but the black undercoat screwed eveyrhting up as you can read in one of my comments above :P
This GK I have bought second hand and unused from a hobbyist that decided to stop (I bought about 7 GK's from her). She originally bought them from E2046, but I wouldn't recommend buying from them, they make recasts and sometimes their molds really don't fit well. Also won't recommened HomeMedia4U where I bought my first GK. My second GK was a present from a friend that went to Hong Kong...also wouldn't recommend that. If I were you and you want a REALLY good GK, buy an original from Mandarake for example.
As stated earlier before I forgot the name, but it was special glue in a small flask from the brand Pritt, it had to be kept in the refrigerator.
itsame00Doing a GK by HAND?! IMPOSSIBRU!! Still, pretty good job there. Never done a GK myself so I don't really know how hard it is.
AND that floating eyeless Rin scared the shit outta me! D:
It IS possible, but it won't be perfect, it will look like this! ;)
Yes, it also scares me. The first time I made a picture and looked back on it, I was all like: D:
MuntoeGood job starting out! There are still a lot of things you could have done which is why this kit turned out so rough in the end...never try to skip the process of sanding or puttying, it really does help achieve a smoother texture in the end. That paint is also way too thick and unfortunately that leads to streaking (doesn't help you had to cover up black primer...). Water it down with water or Windex and you're good to go, it's a lot easier once you get the hang of it :) I think everyone else touched on the improvements (primer, etc.) but I'm also wondering if you pinned your kit? Just gluing it really isn't stable, eventually if it falls over >_<
I really love the colors you've chosen though, they are perfect for the character! I'd like to see more someday :)
I didn't skip the progress, only made a few pictures of it! TT^TT Anyways, it was really hard with this cast to make certain parts look good (that damned jacket).
With me, very thin paint also leads to straking. Or am I the only one with that?
I pinned only her foot into the base, as you can see in the last few pictures. Everything else was glued. With my ealier GK's it worked pretty well with just gluing, so should I be afraid now that my older GK's can be in multiple parts when I arrive home? D:
And thank you~! I really thought these colours would be more fitting for this figure! :) And I plan to make an Marisa-GK in half a year, so then I will make another article like this. :)
