Continuation and End: Misato Katsuragi [Review]Continuation and End: Misato Katsuragi [Review]Review

Hello Everyone!

I'm writing this article today to talk to you about a special figure. Special because of its age, its material and because it has become rare.
Once again, this article is between a diary and a review but this time I'll give a lot of details about the figure so I've classified it as a review. But anyway I 'll tell you the story behind because I love that haha!

So, let's go!

1.0. YOU CAN (NOT) CHOOSE

In this article a few weeks ago I was talking about adding a figure of Misato Katsuragi to my collection, since I loved Evangelion and my collection would not be complete without a figure of her.

I hesitated between two figures: the pretty easy to find and affordable ITEM #276 by Kotobukiya and one rare and more expensive figure by New Line.
Both figures are old. The Kotobukiya is a re-release of a 2008 figure and the New Line released in 2005. So because of that I was pretty worried about the overall quality for both figures.

I asked your opinion and I received a lot, so thank you for that. The Kotobukiya figure won 2/3 of the votes, and I have been left with a decision to make.

Since the beginning I was REALLY enjoyed by the overall design of the New Line figure. But I wasn't convinced by the few pictures I found of the final product: the figure did not look as beautiful as in the official pictures.

But because I preferred her overall design, and thanks to some very usefull advices here, and also since I had the opportunity to find one, I finally choosed to purchase:

Shin Seiki Evangelion: The End of Evangelion - Katsuragi Misato - 1/6 - Movie Ver. (New Line)

A garage kit ITEM #20067 of this figure also exists, but I purchased the prepainted figure.

2.0. YOU CAN (NOT) PURCHASE

Like I said, the most difficult thing is to find one, and furthermore in good condition: She is rare and fragile because she is made of Cold Cast (a mix of resin and metallic powder). I think this is the reason why New Line were able to achieve this level of quality which was not possible with plastics at the time. But it breaks very easily.

As I was writing my previous article, I had seen one for sale on Suruga-ya, at a very interesting price: a little more than 15000Y. The page said "pre-owned, normally used". Nowadays the price is really much higher for this figure in good condition: I have seen one at 34000Y on Amazon JP and one at 86000Y on Yahoo! Japan (certainly sealed, at that price). Incredible!
So, as I already had a very good experience with a pre-owned item from Suruga-ya, I was ready to hit the order button...

BUT...

Before to do so, I translated the page again and I lost my hope: it said "damaged" instead of "normally used". I don't know why this changed, anyway I was back to step one!

Then I saw one pre-owned at 280€ on eBay in Japan, but with the shipping costs plus our damned european import customs fees, she would have cost more than 350€. Too much...

And finally a German professional eBay seller put one up for sale at that exact time. Unbelievable to have a rare figure popping out like this in the country next to you at the time you're looking for it, right?
The figure was like new, and so did the box. She was also expensive but in the end she was much cheaper than all the other options because she was next to my country.
So I made an offer and the seller accepted, the hunt was over!

3.0. YOU CAN (NOT) REVIEW

I really don't regret having choosen this figure. I was completely wrong to be worried: she is amazing, still today! She is defenitely FAR above 2005 standards.
I received her a couple of days ago and she overpassed all my expectations. The details are very fine and her design is incredible. The base also brings real value to the whole.

Her pose perfectly translates the action scene in which she is involved. She covers herself behind a wall while being shot at. Despite this she remains classy and feminine:

As I said the sculpt is very well executed for a 2005 figure. The folds on her clothes and her shoes are very realistic. The fingers and the gun are also well executed.
The paint job is also extremely satisfying. I expected some flaws, but there are no more than on today's high-end figures. Her eyes and the logos on her jacket are finely detailed.

Of course, the hair sculpt is not as precise as what can be done nowadays, but again it is fine for the time.

The base plays an important role, as it includes the wall behind which Misato is protecting herself. The bullet holes and fallen pieces of concrete on the floor are the icing on the cake!
The wall is also nicely detailed. It includes a trap door, plinths and a red-contrasted top part that perfectly matches the color of Misato's jacket. Floor tiles and signs of wear and dirt are also shown on both the floor and the wall.
Once is not custom, I am happy to find dirt and signs of wear on a figure!

And finally, the packaging: the box is cardboard, compact and windowless. The figure and its base don't come in a plastic blister but in a polystyrene mold. They are well secured inside.

3.0+1.0. YOU CAN (NOT) CONCLUDE

Well, New Line overpassed the 2005 standards with this figure. Of course some features would be better achieved today, but a real authenticity emanates from this figure.
Plus, the fact that she is from the movie The End of Evangelion adds a sentimental value to me.
If you plan to buy her, don't hesitate!

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed!

See you all later this week for another article!

Wario542 years ago#83661660Nice review! Just watched Evangelion recently and Misato was my favorite so I was surprised to see that she doesn’t have many figures. This one looks like it does her justice despite its age though!
Thank you and yes, this figure really does her justice! Plus the old school ads nostalgy, like said in a previous comment here.

rogue_g2 years ago#83660736Great job finding her in such good condition! Glad collectors are still able to find old grails like this, gives me hope I'll add her to my collection one day. Definitely appreciate the great pics, kind of a cool novelty to be able to take detailed shots like this of such old figs!
Thanks ! Yeah, sometimes it's a long way to find a grail (it took me 20 months to find my DxD Koneko) but this time it was pretty fast. It was a luck. Hope that you'll also find one.
I'm very glad that you appreciate the pictures: I missed that when I was planning to buy her. Detailed pics at that time were rare, so I wanted to add these to the database for other collectors

AgentDrafire2 years ago#83659246This is a really lovely Misato, you made the right choice getting her! Congrats on obtaining her! She's truly an old but gold figure, like you said, the details are really good, almost comparable to figures today! Thanks for reviewing!
Thank you so much, and glad you liked this review !

dtindcarea2 years ago#83655334Lovely figure and in excellent shape from what I see. Congrats on finding and getting her. Her price was the primary reason I never got this version.
Thank you! Yes, her shape is excellent, fortunately. And yes, her price is excessive usually, that's why I jumped on this one, not cheap of course, but still a good deal for what I got. Hope that you'll have the opportunity to find one, too!

LittlePisces2 years ago#83655313You're very lucky to own her! She's the few Misatos that catches my eyes. Also being made in the early 2000's gives off nostalgia. ^_^
Thank you very much. Yeah, I completely agree!
